TOP 21 MOVIE CAR CHASES: A COUNT DOWN

So after watching the awesome final 22 minutes of Death Proof , i have decided to do another countdown, this time focusing on my favorite car chase films. The countdown will include films that have car chases but aren't best known for them as well as some of the better known chase flicks...
click the read more button or the entry title to check out what i have chosen... CLICK THE YELLOW LINKS FOR TRAILERS OR CHASES....

these are in numerical order starting at number 21 with....

21. BAD BOYS 2 (2003)

Set in Miami, This chase includes a Ferrari, Trans-Am and a truck carrying other such cars. It takes place across Miami and has this insane stunt filmed on the free-way bridge...

BAD BOYS II

20. NATIONAL TREASURE 2 (2007)

Nic cage and his ever receding hairline, along with Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha get into a spot of bother while in London, they get chased by Ed Harris and his goons through the streets of london. Cage in a merc and Harris in a Range Rover. It's apparently the first time a stunt like this has ever been film on the busy streets of london and it's done incredibly well...

NATIONAL TREASURE 2

19. THE ROCK (1995)

Nic Cage returns again to this countdown as Stanley Goodspeed, an FBI agent tasked with looking after Sean Connery's John Mason, the only man ever to escape Alcatraz. Seeing his opportunity to escape Mason, steals a Hummer and Goodspeed chases after him in Ferrari along the crowded streets of San Francisco ending with a tram blowing up and Cage getting Connery. Jerry Bruckheimer seems to be taking over this countdown at the moment...

THE ROCK

18. THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003)

The Wachowski brothers topped the action of the first Matrix film with this free-way chase that mixed CGI and real Car stunts seamlessly. The Freeway was a purpose built set for the stunt which would never have been possible to shoot on an actual freeway. The chase involves many different vehicles from Cadilacs to Escalades and even motor cycles. It's pretty awesome site and the defining moment of the film...

THE MATRIX RELOADED

17. TOMORROW NEVER DIES (1997)

The only Bond film that will feature on this list, basically because there are so many to choose from. I have Chosen Tomorrow Never Dies due to stunt icon Vic Armstrong's technical brilliance at creating stunts. This time Bond has to a escape a multistory car park infested with russian/eastern block heavies using a remote control and a BMW 750 series car. Absolutely awesome.

TOMORROW NEVER DIES

16. THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

NANANANANA BATMAN!!!!!!!!, Christoper Nolan's incredible follow up to his re-imaging of the Batman franchise contains one of the most insane stunts ever put to screen, the actual flipping of an 18 wheeler truck on a main Chicago street. The chase starts with the joker chasing an armored vehicle that is intercepted by the Batmobile culminating in the flipping of said truck. Astonishing to say the least...

THE DARK KNIGHT

15. THE BOURNE SUPREMACY (2004)

Matt Damon returns as amnesiac spy Jason Bourne in director Paul Greengrass's action follow up to 2002 smash hit. This time around Jason is in Moscow and steals a taxi. Hot on his trail are the russian police and russian hitman Karl Urban. The chase is brutal as hell with cars smashing everything. ACE!

THE BOURNE SUPREMACY

14. GONE IN 60 SECONDS (2000)

I know this is controversial, but even though it's a great chase, it is ruined by the CGI assisted jump at the end, apart from that, the chase is great and Elenore, the Shelby Mustang GT500 is a beauty of a vehicle, maybe even more so that McQueens V8 fast back...

Part 1
GONE IN 60 SECONDS

Part 2
GONE IN 60 SECONDS

13. TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A (1985)

A lot of people hold this chase in high regard as it is one of the most insane chases ever filmed, im one of those people. Instead of the cops doing the chasing the cops are the ones being chased and they try everything they can to avoid the pursuers including driving against the traffic on an LA express way. William Friedkin was absolutely mental when he decided to shoot this. The chase was set up by stunt legend Buddy Joe Hooker...

Part 1
TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A

Part 2
TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A

12. TAXI (1996)

The number 12 spot was a toss up between this and the opening of The Transporter. I Chose the original Taxi as it was a better chase. Two souped up Mercs vs a modified Citron and the speed that they travel along french roads and back allys all set to a hip hop soundtrack. a brilliant chase in a brilliant film...

TAXI

11. DUEL (1971)

Steven Spielberg's first feature length film is essentially one long chase as it concerns a man being chased along dusty roads. he film was shot in 14 days and the tension that Spielberg builds in amazing. It's no wonder he's as big as he is now. Fantastic...

DUEL

10. VANISHING POINT (1973)

Again like Duel, Vanishing Point is essentially one long chase as it follows a man who has made a bet that he can get from one side of america to the other in something like 24 hours, breaking every law in the world. The film isn't famous for it's plot, but the car it's self, a 1970 Dodge Challenger known as Kowalski's car. The stunt driving in this is incredible. A highly recommended film.

VANISHING POINT

9. THE DRIVER (1978)

Walter Hill's noir-ish thriller starring Ryan O' Neal and Bruce Dern has some truly breathtaking action scenes especially the final chase scene. One of the best Car chases ever shot.

THE DRIVER

8. THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980)

Absolutely mental, the amount of cars that are destroyed is crazy. Definitely one of the most insane chases ever filmed all set to a great soul and blues soundtrack....comeback John Landis we miss you..

THE BLUES BROTHERS

7. THE SEVEN UPS (1973)

Hot on the heels of his turn in The French Connection, Roy Schieder starred in this 70s crime thriller which contains one of the greatest car chases of all time. Two Pontiac's rip up the tarmac of new york city ending the with an abrupt ending...fucking awesome.

THE SEVEN UPS

6. DEATH PROOF (2007)

Tarantino's first stab at Chase scenes and he make one of the greatest chases ever ever ever. A 1970 Dodge Challenger vs a Black 1969 Dodge Charger on the back roads of Austin Texas with stunt woman Zoe bell hanging on the front of the Challenger is fucking mental and the entire chase lasts a whopping 22 minutes...congrats QT...

DEATH PROOF

5. GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS (1974)

The original and the best, not the greatest story ever, but your not watching the film for it's plot your watching it for it's epic 40 minute chase scene. 93 cars are totaled during the 97 minute run time. An absolute classic.

 GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS

4. THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1973)

William Friedkin returns to the list in a film that isn't really a car chase but more of a train chase as it follows a car being driven by Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle chasing after the new york L-Train. The scene is unbelievable, it's fast, raw, Frenetic and pretty brutal and Friedkin had some major ball sitting in the car as they shot it.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

3. BULLIT (1968)

I know what your thinking, how can this be at number 3 and not number 1, i'll tell you. It is the godfather movie car chases, it has been referenced so many times but there are still better car chases, more technical chases and that is why it is my number 3, but i will say that no-body looks as cool as McQueen behind the wheel of a mustang....

BULLIT

2. MAD MAX (1979)

The reason Bullit is number 3 is because of the opening 10 minutes of Mad Max, one of the most adrenaline fueled openers to any film i have ever seen. The aussie's didn't give a fuck. This is pure fuel injected, 100mph action cinema at it's low budget best and the reason i haven't added the Road Warrior to the list is because i only wanted one mad max film and i love the opening of the first....

I AM THE KNIGHT RIDER - MAD MAX OPENING CHASE

1. RONIN (1998)

This is my favorite action film of all time, you've got DeNiro, Reno, Sean Bean, Stellan Skarsgard, Natasha McElhone and Jonathon Pryce, with a script by J.D Zeik and an uncredited David Mamet, with direction by the late Great John Frankenheimer making his final feature length action film and setting it in various cities in France with two of the most dangerous Car chases ever comitted to celluloid. The film is about a group of Mercenaries hired by some Irish criminals to steal a briefcase from some nefarious Russian criminals. Feature fantastic action scene including a daylight heist on for the briefcase and a shoot out in the ruins of a stadium, Ronin Is truly one of the last Action films that doesn't feature hip hop actors or a heap load of CGI. For this, i have placed it at number 1....
