MY TOP 10 BEST & WORST OF 2011 Pt.1 (10-6)

It's almost the end of another year and it's time for me to count down my top 10 best and worst of 2011. A year full of Giant Robots, The end of a wizard franchise, Sparkly vampire marriages and Hobo's with Shotguns, but what films did I enjoy the most this year? Click read more to find out...

BEST
10. INSIDIOUS: James Wan and Leigh Whannel bring us an old school haunting movie, creepy ass ghosts and some genuinely fucked up scares secure this a place in the top 10 as it's one of the creepiest films ive seen in a long time. Great performances from Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson and Lin Shaye. Highly recommended.

WORST
10. CONAN: Marcus Nispel's take on Robert E. Howards character is a far cry from Arnie and John Milias's 1981 film, more fantasy epic along the lines of Clash Of The Titans than brutal barbarian film, For me though it didn't work and the lack of plot was just annoying, every other scene was a fight scene. Jason Momoa's Conan was a cheeky chap and not the silent almost indestructable Conan from the earlier films and although it's not a remake but more a new adaptation of Howard's work, it just fell flat, but that's pretty much the what i've come to expect from Nispel.  Not worth the time....

BEST
9. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: After the failure and complete disregard for the comic books in Last Stand and that Wolverine film, along comes a film that is equally as good as the brilliant second film, here we are shown the origins of the Xmen, how Charles ended up in the wheel chair and how magneto became an evil Ian McKellen. Armed with a top notch script from Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn (both Kick-Ass), Zack Stentz and Ashley Williams and some brilliant direction from Vaughn, it gave comic book geeks a reason to love the films again. Great cast too with James McAvoy, Rose Byrne (again), Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon. Not to be missed.

WORST
9. LOVE & OTHER DRUGSA romantic comedy with a very serious plot point of terminal cancer, and a film in which the comedy does not work well with the drama, you can have black comedies but when you have a very serious scene that's quite emotional and heartbreaking only for the next scene to have what is pretty much a 10 minute Bonner gag, it feels a bit disjointed. It's also not very funny and i feel bad because the films heart was in the right place but it just didn't work. It's not a terrible film just one that i feel may insult some people, therefore it's on my list of worst films.

BEST
8. FAST FIVE: Yeah i know, how could i put a Fast & Furious movie in my Top 10, well i loved it, 2 and a half hours of gunfights and car chases, easily the best since the first and everything is done practically, no blue screen/green screen, just pure car stunts, and being a car chase obsessive it's pretty fucking obvious this was going to be in the top 10. Great direction from Justin Lin and it's great to see everyone from each film back and the inclusion of Dwayne Johnson on full on beast mode with the biggest hand cannon since Hellboy. I loved it.

WORST
8. PAUL: Now I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Spaced, Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz are favourites of mine, so what happens when they transport their geeky style over to the U.S? they dumb everything down to make a dull, predictable and frankley rather unfunny film. Shame really as it had such a great cast and not even Jason Bateman, who if I wasn't a very very straight Heterosexual would pursue as a mate (come on the dude was Teen Wolf Too). Stick with their home grown comedies.

BEST
7. CAPTAIN AMERICA: Everybody give Joe Johnston a bad time, i don't because the guy directed The Rocketeer, that early 90s awesomeness that mixed WW2 era period America with modern-ish technology to give it a sort of retro futuristic feel, and it was a goddamn fun as fuck adventure film. 20 years later he's done it again, he's made another WW2 era Retro sci-fi film, and again it's a fun as fuck adventure film. A great cast with Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving bring us an almost comical in tone action adventure that for me has been the best comic book adaptation since Iron Man 1. A rousing fun filled adventure film. Highly recommended.

WORST
7. FASTER: The Rock plays a man released from prison hell bent on revenge in this slap dash pointless 'action film' that has random plot threads that add fuck all to the film and just made it feel longer than it should have. And the silly bloody ending, At least Mr. Johnson did good with Fast Five. Avoid this film as it's a complete waste of time.

BEST
6. RED HILL: An outstanding Australian film, a modern day western with True Blood's Ryan Kwantan as a newly appointed deputy to a small Town who, is unfortunately dragged into a revenge plot by a former resident who has escaped jail and is returning to exact vengeance on the town for his wrongful imprisonment. With some brilliant cinematography and some exceptionally tense moments, Red Hill is one of those films that most people have never heard of. I do recommend this film.

WORST
6. LONDON BOULEVARDA London set gangster film from the writer of the Departed that litterally had nothing of interest in it. A cockney geezer film made by an American who seemed to have watched every Guy Richie/Nick Love film and actually thought the word Fuck and Cunt would appeal to people. Colin Farrell does one of the worst cockney accents since Dick Van Dyke, Ray Winston mumbles his way through the script dressed as Jim Royal going to a wedding and Keira Knightly shows up as some sort of put up on celebrity. Only good thing about the film was David Thewlis' performance as a drug addicted former Thespian and Anna Friel as Farrell's crack head mental sister. Utter trash....you slag!
