Shawn Francis returns to the Apocalypse with a rundown of hist top 13 Horror & Sci-fi films of 2013. It's a short and sharp list with a few sentences to explain why, for more information click on the title of the film....
In
a very particular order they are . . .
1).
THE CONJURING: They stuck to practical FX, had the perfect actors for
their characters and the chills were actually scary. A haunted house
flick done old school, And it worked!
2).
UNDER THE BED: A throwback to 80s Joe Dante flicks that even looked
like that period. I loved the 80s and I was with this movie every
inch of the way. Best movie to date about the "boogeyman."
3).
CRAWLSPACE: Another homage to a bygone era. Aliens, scanner-like
powers, all done in a confined space ala James Cameron's ALIENS. They
even worked in a nice cranial blow at the end. And a nice plot twist
mid-way through.
4).
GRABBERS: Breathtaking cinematography, dead-on CGI monsters,
relatable characters and comedy that made me laugh. An Irish made
monster movie that hits the bull’s-eye in all departments.
5).
AXE GIANT: THE WRATH OF PAUL BUNYAN: From MOSQUITO (1995) director,
Gary Jones. Need I say more? With Tim Lovelace, who was also in
MOSQUITO.
6).
HELL BABY: Hilarious from beginning to end, with an even more
hilarious ending where random people are killed off by the baby from
hell.
7).
FRIGHT NIGHT 2: NEW BLOOD: It's a direct-to-video remake that I
really liked. Which surprised me even more. This is the beginning of
a direct-to-video franchise. Bring it on, I say.
8).
CURSE OF CHUCKY: Like FRIGHT NIGHT 2, I was expecting a mediocre
movie and got so much more. Chucky is actually menacing for once. And
more sequels are on the way.
9).
SPIDERS 3D: My favorite of the new giant spider movies this year. I
consider this a very loose sequel to Gary Jones' SPIDERS (2000). CGI
FX is quite good as well.
10).
BIG ASS SPIDER!: The last entry in this year's Giant Spider Movie
resurgence. The bigger the spider gets the better the CGI is in my
book. Forget EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (2002). You want a giant arachnid
comedy go for this one.
11).
PACIFIC RIM: Guillermo del Toro directed American kaiju film
most certainly delivers the eye candy goods.
12).
ZOMBIE NIGHT: John Gulager's third movie has its ups and downs but it
struck me just right. Wouldn't mind a sequel, which it kind of leaves
off on.
13).
THE SECRET OF CRICKLEY HALL (BBC mini-series): Grim World War
II/modern
day ghost story where a butt load of kids are killed. Keep some
hankies near when viewing this. It's a tearjerker, but a good one.
