It's
been a while, and for that i'm sorry, ive been massively preoccupied
with other projects and I just haven't had the time to write reviews.
I'll be trying to get more posted this year but between finding a new
job and trying to get some more freelance work i'll try my damnedest.
Anyways, checkout the review I just wrote. It's for a horror film
called The Void and it's really really good.
As
you may see from the change of the site and the URL (which will be
changing again soon) ive decided to re-brand the website. The main
reason for this is to spruce up the site and make it a bit more genre
specific and due to other commitments make the reviews a bit smaller,
more rapid fire if you will. So welcome to 2017, yes I know ive not
posted anything since my top 10 of 2016 and that's gonna change,
hopefully. So to kick off the new branded website here's a review for
indie horror flick, The Void. A pretty awesome throwback to the films
of John Carpenter and even some Lucio Fulci. Check out my review
below.
The
Void plays out like Assault On Precinct 13 made out with The Beyond
and made a baby, then they named that baby Hellraiser. Then gave him
the nickname, The Keep. It's a mash up of all these films and even
though it borrows heavily from the classics of the 80s horror genre,
the film still feels pretty damn fresh. The Void follows a group of
people closing down a hospital. Like Precinct 13 they're moving to a
new building and so, the clean up process is in full swing. A deputy
Sheriff, while on patrol comes across a man in the road. He takes him
to the near by hospital. The deputy goes back to the car and find a
hooded man in white robes with a black triangle painted on the face.
He shits him self and looks around, there are more of the hooded
figures in the treeline. One of the men attacks him but he's able to
fight him off. Two hunters arrive at the hospital for the injured man
and this is where the film goes into 80s over drive, taking in the
siege genre, demonic cults, gruesome body transformations and cellar
to hell theatrics as the inhabitants of the hospital have to fight
their way to survival from an other worldly demon.
Coming
from the makers of the absurd Astron-6 production company, the
nutters behind Man-borg and Father's Day, two films that while they
play homage to the films that came before them, are low budget
chuckle flicks. Pastiches of 90s Cyborg movies and 70s Biker films
but with tongue firmly in cheek. The Void is a completely different
kettle of fish compared to those two films. The Void plays everything
straight. The plot, performances and the atmosphere are pure straight
up horror and it's refreshing to see a modern horror film stick to
the rules. Gone are the jump scares and the PG-13 bloodless horror,
instead they've gone the practical route. The FX in The Void are
absolutely stunning. For a film financed via Kickstarter, they didn't
skimp on the budget and every dollar seems to be up on screen, unlike
the film that I backed on Kickstarter, Harbinger Down. That film was
financed via Kickstarter and made by honest to god experts in the
practical FX world, Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff. But Harbinger Down
sucked. So it was an actual real treat to see some brutal Rob Bottin
style horror FX, tentacles and everything.
So
if you're after a new horror film for old school horror fans, then
i'd highly recommend checking out The Void. With it's good
performances, decent score, great throwback references and some of
the best practical horror FX of the last ten years, then you can't go
wrong. The Void gets a big ass 4 out of 5 revolvers...Seriously,
check this bad boy out...
