MY TOP 10 BEST & WORST OF 2011 Pt.2 (5 - 1)

BEST 
5. SOURCE CODE: Duncan Jones' follow up to his brilliant début MOON, is a strange film, not in plot but by the fact it's an original film, made by a studio that features a very interesting plot. Source Code is about a man who has 8 minutes to find a bomb and a bomber, if he fails then 'BOOM' the train explodes, he's then given another 8 minutes and so on. It's very reminiscent of the first ever episode of The Twilight Zone with it's ending too. With some great cinematography and some stand out performance by Jake Gyllenhall and Vera Farmiga, SOURCE CODE manages to be engaging, entertaining and by the edge-of-your-seat thrilling. I highly recommend this film.

5. THE GREEN LANTERN: An absolute turd of a movie, no redeeming features what so ever. Almost the entire film is CGI even down to Ryan Reynold's costume which look cartoonish. I really can't recommend this films as it really is that bad and coming from the man who gave us Casino Royale you'd expect something better, if this is the quality of films we're getting from the DC universe (excluding Batman) then i have little to no hope for Zack Snyder's upcoming SUPERMAN film. Utter garbage. Avoid.

4. ATTACK THE BLOCK: What do you get when you take the U.K urban film throw into the mix an Alien invasion and have it written by one half of comedy duo Adam & Joe? you get ATTACK THE BLOCK, a film so steeped in 80s nostalgia and the 'Chav' phenomena, that you forget it's a debut film and a cracking comedy too boot. Joe Cornish' script is littered with little nods to films he grew up with and his grasp of how the 'yout' of today act and sound is spot on. It's also pretty fucking funny. Now only if Peg and Frost went this route with their movie Paul. An absolutely brilliant, funny, exciting and at times also rather sad film. If you haven't seen it, you should and fast.

4. LITTLE FOCKERS: I liked Meet The Parent, I found Meet The Fockers enjoyable enough But Little Fockers is summin' else, a completely redundant comedy that just recycles the same plot again but with the inclusion of kids. Jessica Alba pops up in an incredibly pointless, but rather sexy role, Ben Stiller shows he has absolutely no range as an actor, Blythe Danner seems like she can't be arsed, Barbara Streisand, probably the saving grace of the film, seems to be having fun playing the sex therapist mother of Gaylord Focker (yeah it was funny first time around) and perhaps the greatest actor of the last 40 years, a man who gave us such iconic character such as Johnny Boy, Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta and young Vito Corleone, spends an entire scene in an incredibly painful and extremely unfunny scene with a Viagra induced hard on. What the Fuck DeNiro. Fuck this film, hell not even Dustin Hoffman wanted to do it, but ended up in it due to a large pay check and that guy made Mr.Magorium's Wonder Emporium.....Piss Poor, avoid it like the Plague.

3. STAKE LAND: The antidote to the sparkly fuckers from Twilight, Stake Land is a breathtaking post apocalyptic road movie about two people, a teenage boy and a man as they cross the wasteland that was once the U.S while trying to avoid Vampires. Sure it sounds cheesy but believe me this film is hauntingly beautiful and comes across like The Road meets Blade, It's not entirely fast paced but it's the story and the relationship between the two main characters that makes the film believable. It even had Kelly McGillis, she off of Top Gun, who now looks like Ron Perlman, She plays a Nun who is saved by the leads, she becomes the mother figure in the boys life, while the man is the father figure. It's such a great film, it's almost like a zombie holocaust film but with Vamps instead of the Living Dead. It's a small film and not many people have seen it but it's totally worthwhile checking out. Just don't expect these blood suckers to fucking Sparkle.

3. MY SOUL TO TAKE:  Probably best to read my review HERE, all im going to say is Fuck you Wes Craven. The entire film was just arse, the characters were bland it had a rather crap villain and the plot was pretty fucking shit, at no point in the film did I feel anything for the characters, i couldn't give two shits who lived or died.

2. SUPER 8: Man, I fucking loved this film, this was the one movie I was dying to see this year because it was JJ Abrams love letter to the films of Spielberg, a man who's movies I am very fond of, so how excited was I to see it? It was like Christmas when it started, it was like I was unwrapping presents but each present was reference or a homage to all the films I love. Everything about this film is the tits, the music, production design, small town U.S.A, the posters on the bedroom walls, the intervening of the military to cover shit up, and just the awesomeness of being a kid. For me the only things missing to actually make this a Spielberg film were a BMX chase and a John Williams score. Awesome....

2. BLOOD OUT: I doubt many people have heard of this film, this mini review might give you a little idea why, this film is an American Mixed Martial Arts cop drama, It stars Luke Goss, Tamer Hassan, Vinnie Jones, Val Kilmer and 50 Cent, it's about a cop, played by Luke Goss who's brother is murdered by gang leader Tamer Hassan, Goss goes undercover as a fighter to get in with Hassan who reports to Vinnie Jones who is in a war with Val Kilmer's seedy, Fat sleazy Brando esque rival, 50 Cent plays a corrupt cop, there's a few fights, some naughty language and that's it, a waste of fucking money, time and energy, a piss poor excuse for a film that even the editor must have given up on as it just ends, it cuts to black almost mid sentence. The most ridiculous thing about the movie is that it's set in Louisiana so why are the heads of local gangs being played by cockney geezers, they don't even try and fake an accent. A truely terrible film and one that i wish to god i hadn't wasted time watching.

1. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES: I wasn't really sold on the idea of a prequel cum sort of remake of Conquest Of Planet OF The Apes after the vomit inducing remake Tim Burton gave us a few years back and being such a fan of the original 5 films I was sceptical at how they would handle that universe. I don't care what anyone says but this is a prequel to the original, they even reference it in the film, but i have to say i was blown away by how they made this film. Instead of Michael Bay-ing it by blowing shit up every five minutes, what we got was a intelligently written story of Animal testing and the effects one drug has on the primate species, the development of the apes through a sort of rapid evolution and how they decided enough is enough. It's a brilliantly written film with the first 40-50 minutes all about the relationship between Caesar (the Ape) and James Franco's character, a strange father/son relationship until something happens and Caesar is sent to a primate sanctuary where the films theme of Rebellion and the idea of the planet of the apes stems from. The final 50 minutes is how it all went down, apes vs humans. It's also a rather beautiful film with it's touching performances, especially from John Lithgow as Franco's father who is suffering from Alzheimers and then you have Andy Sirkis again bringing his Mo-cap expertise to the mostly dialogue free role of Caesar, every emotion is beautifully captures in CGI. My only gripe is that at points the animation is a tiny bit ropey. Do not miss this brilliant film.

1. HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2: FULL SEQUENCE: FUCK YOU TOM SIX! A truly offensive pile of self indulgent cinematic excrement, not offensive due to content but why anyone would finance this revolting piece of shit. A waste of time. The BBFC should have stuck with their ban on the film just to save people from actually having to sit through it. One more time...FUCK YOU TOM SIX. Worst film of the year....by far.
